    Background & context

    DEMAG developed the SdKfz 250 as the little brother of the 251 for reconnaissance troops, dispatch riders and platoon commanders. The early version, called Alte in hindsight, had a body of multi-angled armour plates: handsome to look at, expensive to weld and so cramped inside that a full squad barely fitted. After around 4,200 vehicles, production switched in October 1943 to the angular Neu version. The SdKfz 253 was the fully roofed sister version for artillery observers who had to follow the armoured spearheads without getting into the fighting themselves.

    On the tabletop

    This light half-track carries a scout section of your German reconnaissance forward at speed. Its armour stops rifle fire and small splinters, but heavy machine guns and anti-tank weapons go straight through, so you keep it moving and use cover. As the fully enclosed SdKfz 253 it follows the armoured spearhead with an artillery observer. The early version was built until October 1943, and the kit is the basis for every Rubicon expansion set for the SdKfz 250.
