    Background & context

Radio variants such as the SdKfz 250/3 and the 251/3 carried field radio sets together with a large frame aerial above the fighting compartment and served as rolling command posts. Rommel's vehicle Greif was of this type and appeared in the newsreels again and again. Until 1944 the radio vehicles operated mainly on the Eastern Front. The conspicuous frame aerials did attract snipers and artillery observers, however, which is why they later gave way to the inconspicuous star aerials.

    On the tabletop

These radio fittings turn one SdKfz 250 and one 251 into mobile command posts for your German force. You build the 250/3 as an Alte or Neu and the 251/3 as an Ausf. C or D. The large frame aerial made the vehicles easy to spot, the later star aerial was less obvious, and both are included. Among the five figures is Rommel, whose command vehicle Greif was of this type. In a scenario or diorama the vehicle represents the command element behind the fighting troops.
