The Sd.Kfz 222 as a light armoured reconnaissance vehicle with a 2-cm cannon and the Sd.Kfz 223 as a radio vehicle with its distinctive frame antenna mast were the eyes of the German armoured forces - fast, agile, and present on all theaters of war. In addition to the Wehrmacht, Romania, Bulgaria, and the Chinese Nationalist Army also used these vehicles.

The Sd.Kfz 222 and 223 were among the light reconnaissance vehicles of the German reconnaissance battalions that drove far ahead of the armored units. The Sd.Kfz 222 was armed with a 2 cm cannon and an MG 34, while the Sd.Kfz 223 sacrificed armament for extensive radio equipment with a frame antenna. Both variants were used in all theaters of war - from the deserts of North Africa to the Eastern Front - and were employed by Romania, Bulgaria, and the National Revolutionary Army in addition to the Wehrmacht.

The 222 and 223 variants cover armed reconnaissance and radio vehicle roles, but remain vulnerable to concentrated anti-tank fire.
