    Product details

    Background & context

Fiat Ansaldo built the M13/40 from 1940 as the main battle tank of the Italian army, although by armour and weight it belonged more in the light class. Riveted plates, a diesel engine good for a little over thirty kilometres per hour and a 47mm gun were enough in the desert only briefly. The Semovente 75/18 put a 75mm mountain howitzer into a low fixed superstructure on the same chassis and so packed considerably more punch. Australians at Tobruk and German units kept captured examples running.

    On the tabletop

The kit builds either the M13/40, the most widely produced Italian tank, or the Semovente 75/18 self-propelled gun. The M13/40 with its 47 mm gun and machine guns is the tank of Italian Bolt Action armies in the Western Desert and Italy, while the Semovente adds far more firepower with its 75 mm howitzer. The decal sheet also lets you field captured vehicles for Australian troops at Tobruk or for German units.
