A complete Italian paratrooper force from one box: 42 plastic Paras, heavy weapons and two vehicles. Enough for a rifle platoon, a weapons platoon and a small tank platoon.

Background & context

The Folgore Division was raised as an airborne formation but never made a combat jump: the planned attack on Malta was called off, and so in 1942 it went into the desert on foot. On the southern wing at El Alamein it held for days against British attacks, with little water, hardly any anti-tank weapons and no prospect of relief. After the battle the formation was practically wiped out, and the few who returned formed the core of new Paracadutisti units. Its reputation outlived the war and was acknowledged even on the British side.

On the tabletop

There is a decision to make before you glue: the Semovente kit becomes either the assault gun or an M13/40 Carro Armato. Alongside it the AB 41 armoured car scouts the flanks, and together the two make up a small armoured platoon. The main weight, though, lies with the 42 Paracadutisti on plastic sprues, from which you build the platoon command and the squads. The two MMG teams and the mortar team stand behind them as heavy weapons and hold the line while the paras go forward. The result is a tough infantry army with some vehicle support that is at home on desert terrain.
