Background & context

Italy went to war in 1940 with an army that was designed for colonial campaigns and reached its limits in Europe: too little motorisation, obsolete tanks, thin supply lines. Alongside the regular Regio Esercito stood the Camicie Nere, the militia units of the Fascist Party, recognisable by black shirt and fez. Their fighting power varied greatly, their political weight less so. Both fought side by side in Greece, North Africa, on the Eastern Front and finally in their own country.

On the tabletop

The most important decision comes before gluing: the plastic kit becomes either the M13/40 with its turret or the Semovente 75/18 with a short howitzer in a fixed superstructure. The 36 infantry are enough for three squads, and with steel helmet, tropical helmet or cap you determine which theatre of war they fight in. The command comes from the 4 metal figures: two officers, one with pistol and one with SMG, plus medic and radio operator. The three weapons teams with 3 crew each have clear jobs, the MMG against infantry, the mortar against enemies in cover and the 47mm anti-tank gun against tanks.
