    Background & context

    The US Army regarded the M4A3 with the Ford GAA V8 as the best Sherman version, and from 1944 it pushed the older engine variants out of the combat units. At the end of 1943 a programme was under way that reworked hull, turret and ammunition stowage; the 76 mm armed wet-stowage version reached the troops from September 1944. The M4A3E8 put wider tracks on a new HVSS suspension and appeared in the Ardennes in December 1944. As the Easy Eight it remained in service into the Korean War.

    On the tabletop

    For American tank platoons from autumn 1944, this box gives you an early or late M4A3 with the 76 mm gun or the Easy Eight on the wider HVSS suspension. The 76 mm gun was introduced because the older armament no longer coped with new German tanks. The late M4A3 has a muzzle brake, and the Easy Eight belongs from the Ardennes in December 1944 onwards, all the way to Korea. Duckbills, extra track and stowage show vehicles in mud and winter.
