    Background & context

    Every US infantry battalion had its own heavy weapons company, D Company, with one platoon of 81mm mortars and two platoons of water-cooled M1917 machine guns. At company level there was also the weapons platoon with air-cooled M1919A4s and 60mm mortars. The heavy .50 calibre M2, in service since 1933, really belonged on vehicles and in anti-aircraft defence, but quickly found its way into the trenches because it punched through house walls, armoured personnel carriers and cover alike. This mix of direct and indirect fire often let the US infantry win before it even advanced.

    On the tabletop

    This plastic set builds the heavy weapons platoon of a US army in Bolt Action: Browning medium machine guns, .50 cal heavy machine guns and 81 mm mortars with twelve crew figures. You can make up to four mortars and machine guns, or three weapons teams plus a platoon commander and attendant, since an HMG needs a crew of four. MMGs and mortars pin the enemy with direct and indirect fire, while the .50 cal punches through cover and hits light vehicles. Four order dice are included.
