Background & context

The 1st Infantry Division, whose red one is emblazoned on the decals, was the most experienced division in the US Army in 1944: North Africa, Sicily, then Omaha Beach in the first wave on D-Day. Its structure is the blueprint for this box: rifle platoons of riflemen, BAR men and bazooka teams, behind them the company's heavy weapons, plus tanks and armoured cars as attached support. US doctrine relied on firepower and radio rather than the bayonet. A regiment fielded more machine guns and vehicles than any opponent, and that is exactly how the army plays on the table too.

On the tabletop

What your squads rely on is up to you through the way you arm the 36 infantrymen: rifles and carbines for the bulk, the BAR as the core of the squad's firepower, submachine guns for close combat and bazookas against vehicles. From the 16 crew figures you put together the MG and mortar teams that provide fire support from behind the platoon. The Sherman is the list's battle tank, and the 57mm anti-tank gun waits beside a road for enemy vehicles. With the armoured car you choose between the M8 with its turret gun and the open M20, which tends to tag along as an escort vehicle. With the Big Red One decals the force takes the field as the 1st Infantry Division.
