Background & context

At first the German armoured force divided the work: the Panzer III was to fight enemy tanks, while the Panzer IV with its short 7.5 cm gun was to suppress bunkers, MG nests and infantry. Ausf. B and C remained small production runs; only the Ausf. D went into production in larger numbers from 1939, with a new front plate including a hull MG and markedly thicker armour. These early vehicles rolled through Poland, France, across the Balkans, to North Africa and into the first summer on the Eastern Front.

On the tabletop

With its short 7.5 cm gun, the Panzer IV Ausf. B, C or D is a medium tank with a light howitzer in Bolt Action. Its job is support, using high-explosive shells against infantry, machine-gun nests and bunkers and leaving the fight against tanks to the Panzer III. That makes it right for German armoured platoons in Poland, France, North Africa and the early Eastern Front. Whether it becomes a B, C or D is decided during assembly.
