    Background & context

Blitzkrieg was never an official doctrine but a catchword for something the Wehrmacht had mastered better than its opponents in 1939 and 1940: moving tanks, infantry, artillery and radio to the same beat. The vehicles of those years were astonishingly short of punch. The Panzer IV still carried the short 7.5cm gun and was intended as a support vehicle against positions, not as a tank destroyer. The troops looked different from later on too: tall marching boots, little camouflage pattern, a lot of leather.

    On the tabletop

When you build the 36 early-war infantry you decide who goes into the HQ and how you distribute rifles, SMGs and light MGs among the squads. The MMG and mortar join as weapons teams, and the light howitzer fires indirectly at positions as artillery. The Sd.Kfz. 251 carries a squad forward under armour. You build the Panzer IV with its short gun as an Ausf. B, C or D and use it against MG nests and buildings rather than against tanks. That way you play an early-war platoon for Poland and France in which infantry, half-track and tank advance together.
