    Product details

    Background & context

The Stuart was already obsolete as a battle tank by 1943, but it stayed in service because the US Army needed something that drove fast, drank little fuel and carried radio traffic into the reconnaissance battalion. To that end the M5 swapped the scarce radial engine of the M3 for two Cadillac car engines with automatic transmission: quieter, easier to drive, more readily available. The 37 mm gun was no longer any use against Panther and Tiger, but against half-tracks, lorries and field positions it was enough.

    On the tabletop

In Bolt Action you field the M5 Stuart as a light tank for American, British, Soviet or Chinese army lists. As an M5 or an M5A1 with reinforced front armour it scouts and takes on half-tracks, lorries and field positions, though its 37 mm gun is no longer enough against late-war German tanks. The E7-7 carries a flamethrower and a coaxial machine gun in place of the gun. You choose the version during assembly, and Achtung Panzer! covers it too.
