Background & context

Ayo Gorkhali, the Gurkhas are coming: the battle cry went ahead of the regiments that Britain had been recruiting in Nepal since 1815. In the Second World War around 250,000 Nepalese were under arms, in North Africa, Italy, Malaya and Burma. Their reputation rested on close combat and night attacks, and on the kukri, the curved knife that every man carried. Japanese units in Burma feared above all the patrols that climbed into their positions at night.

On the tabletop

From the 42 Gurkhas you put together the HQ and Rifle Squads of a full Rifle Platoon and set the squad size to suit the game and the opponent. Behind the infantry, the MMG and mortar teams operate as Weapons Teams and keep paths and cover under fire. The 6-pounder and its crew take up a position with a clear field of fire and wait for enemy vehicles. Up front, the M3 Medium and M5 Light share the work: the medium tank pushes through the centre, the light one drives round a flank. For smaller games one of the two stays in the box, and infantry, anti-tank capability and fire support are still in place.
