    Background & context

    From 1943 the SdKfz 234 replaced the older six-wheeled armoured cars. Its air-cooled Tatra diesel engine had originally been designed for North Africa, but the vehicle never got there: it served on the Eastern Front, in Italy and in Normandy. The reconnaissance battalions of the panzer divisions used it for long-range thrusts, flank protection and rearguard actions. The 234/2 version with its enclosed turret bore the nickname Puma and is still regarded today as one of the most elegant armoured cars of the war.

    On the tabletop

    The eight-wheeled SdKfz 234 gives your German reconnaissance in the late war years a choice of three versions. As the 234/2 Puma it mounts the 5 cm gun in an enclosed turret and scouts far ahead or guards a flank. The 234/3 with the short 7.5 cm gun supports with high-explosive rounds against infantry and positions. With the PaK 40, the 234/4 becomes mobile anti-tank firepower working from cover. A 234/1 with a 2 cm cannon can be built using a separately available expansion set.
