Background & context

The W in the name stands for wet stowage, meaning ammunition in water-filled containers in the hull floor instead of in the side walls. Together with the large-hatch hull, which at last let the drivers bail out quickly, this made the M4A3 the most survivable Sherman version of the war. The 105 mm variant went along as the company's own artillery and shelled positions against which a tank gun could do nothing. On Okinawa the POA-CWS-H5 flamethrower tanks joined them, converted in workshops on Hawaii.

On the tabletop

An American tank platoon of 1944 and 1945 can fill two roles with this Sherman. With the 75 mm gun it accompanies infantry and fights tanks, and with the 105 mm howitzer it acts as a support vehicle shelling positions a gun can do little against. For Okinawa you build the POA-CWS-H5 flame tank, for British units the Sherman IV, IVB or IVBY. The suspension can be VVSS with narrow tracks or HVSS with wide ones.
