Background & context

With the Ausf. E the Panzer III found its final form: six road wheels on torsion bars, a running gear that stayed until the end of the series. It was initially armed with the 3.7cm, which proved too weak against the Matilda in France, which is why many vehicles were re-armed with the 5cm KwK 38. From July 1940 the two-tone camouflage was dropped, and after that everything left the yard in plain dark grey. The Ausf. F received armoured fan grilles against dust and heat and went to North Africa with them.

On the tabletop

The Ausf. E, F and G show the Panzer III as it served in France in 1940 and afterwards in North Africa and on the Eastern Front. As a medium tank it fights enemy vehicles while the Panzer IV supports the infantry. For the desert you choose the Ausf. F with armoured vents against dust and heat. The date also guides your painting: dark grey with dark brown until July 1940, plain dark grey afterwards. Hatches and crew are optional.
