    Background & context

    From 1944 US industry combined the proven M4A1 cast hull with the bigger large-hatch upper hull, the T23 turret and the 76 mm gun. The W in the designation stands for wet ammunition stowage, which made fires after a hit far less common. 2,171 vehicles of this version were built, and the British called it the Sherman IIA. So the oldest Sherman hull soldiered on in the hardest-hitting version of the war.

    On the tabletop

    From 1944 the Sherman with the 76 mm gun in the T23 turret reached the front so that American tank platoons could stand up better to heavy German tanks. In your platoon it takes on the anti-tank role while older Shermans deal with infantry and positions. Wet ammunition stowage made fires after a hit less common. You choose an early or late T23 turret and build the hatches open with crew or closed. The British designated it Sherman IIA.
