    The Panzer IV as it looked in 1940: short 7.5cm gun, boxy superstructure, hull machine gun. The 100 parts build either an Ausf. D or an Ausf. E, and two crew figures come in the box as well.

    Background & context

    After the Polish campaign production was stepped up, and the Ausf. D brought back the hull machine gun that had been left out in the meantime. The mantlet moved to the outside and the sides were given 20 millimetres; 248 vehicles were built. From October 1940 the Ausf. E followed with thicker hull front armour, bolted-on additional plates and a commander's cupola from the Panzer III, which moved further forward. Only 206 of these came off the line by April 1941, and older vehicles were retrofitted during workshop overhauls.

    On the tabletop

    With its short 7.5 cm gun, the Panzer IV Ausf. D and E is the support tank of German troops in France in 1940 and into 1941. It shells MG nests, anti-tank gun positions and infantry, leaving enemy tanks to the Panzer III. You recognise the Ausf. D by its external mantlet and hull machine gun, and the Ausf. E by its reinforced nose armour with an extra plate and the cupola taken from the Panzer III. Extra stowage and two crew figures are included.
