    Product details

    Background & context

When tank destroyers were needed in large numbers in 1944, the choice fell on what was plentifully available: the chassis of the Czech 38(t). Onto it went an enclosed box with a steeply sloped glacis plate and a 7.5cm PaK 39. It was no great stroke of genius, but it was reliable, small and quick to build. Around 2,580 were produced by the end of the war, replacing the open-topped Marders, whose crews caught every splinter. Fewer than fifty vehicles were converted into Flammpanzers, first used in the Ardennes.

    On the tabletop

Small, low and with sloped frontal armour, the Hetzer lies in wait well hidden behind hedges and walls. Its 7.5 cm gun penetrates almost any opponent except heavy tanks, so let it fire from cover at approaching vehicles. You build the early, mid or late production version from 1944, with three mantlets and two sets of road wheels. As the Flammpanzer 38(t) it becomes a weapon against positions and infantry, as in its first action in the Ardennes.
