    Background & context

The Panther was rushed to the front in 1943 because the T-34 had caught the German designers off guard. The Ausf. D was the first production series and nearly wrecked the reputation of the whole line: at Kursk more Panthers dropped out through fires and transmission failures than through enemy fire. The Ausf. A cleared up some of the teething troubles and received a new commander's cupola and a proper ball mount for the bow MG. Around 3,000 vehicles of the two early versions left the assembly halls by the summer of 1944.

    On the tabletop

The two early Panther versions belong in games from mid 1943, the Ausf. D for example at Kursk and the Ausf. A in the fighting up to summer 1944. Strong frontal armour and a hard-hitting gun make it dangerous in open country and at long range. Its weaker flanks are best kept away from enemy tanks and anti-tank guns. Two commander cupolas and optional side skirts let you decide which version you build.
