Background & context

Every British battalion had two special companies on the wings of the line: on the right the grenadiers, the tallest and most experienced men, and on the left the Light Company as skirmishers and scouts. Both wore shoulder wings as a visible mark of their standing. The flank companies of several battalions were often drawn together into composite formations of their own, in the Waterloo campaign for instance for the defence of Hougoumont.

On the tabletop

Their shoulder wings mark these 52 British soldiers as flank companies, meaning grenadiers and light infantry. Within the battalion the grenadiers stand on the right wing and the light company on the left. You can also send the light company ahead of the line as skirmishers or into farms and gardens. From the flank companies of several battalions you form a composite unit like the one that defended Hougoumont in the Waterloo campaign. Officers, colour bearers, NCOs and drummers are included.
