Background & context

A British battalion consisted of ten companies, eight of which formed the bulk as Centre Companies. It was they who lay two deep behind the ridge at Waterloo, stood up and gave the advancing French column a volley at short range. Wellington had practised this combination of reverse slope and line fire for years in the Iberian Peninsula. The Belgic Shako came in during 1812 and still shapes the image of the British army of 1815 today.

On the tabletop

The 52 figures in Belgic shakos are enough for a British line battalion of the Waterloo period with officers, colour bearers, NCOs and drummers. The centre companies are the bulk of the battalion, and you deploy them in a two-deep line. Sheltered behind a rise, you wait for the French column and meet it with volleys at short range. On the wings, grenadiers and the light company from the flank companies box complete the battalion.
