Background & context

1809 is the year in which Bernard Cornwell's novel Sharpe's Rifles is set: after the retreat to Corunna, a scattered band of the 95th Rifles fights its way through Galicia. Patrick Harper, an Irishman from Donegal and at first Sharpe's toughest adversary within his own squad, becomes his most loyal comrade along the way. The chest of the Spanish officer Blas Vivar, which he defends against a French horseman in the 54mm scene, is the pivot of this story. As sharpshooters, the real 95th Rifles wore green jackets instead of red and carried the Baker rifle instead of the musket.

On the tabletop

This box contains Patrick Harper from Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe novels twice over. The 54 mm figure on a scenic base shows him firing his ramrod into a French cavalryman and is meant for display. The 28 mm version is built with or without shako, marching or ready to fire, and leads a small group of the 95th Rifles on the table. For actions in Spain in 1809 he fits alongside riflemen and French opponents of the same period.
