    Background & context

Between the late 12th and the middle of the 13th century the charge with couched lance reached its peak: rider and horse became a single projectile, checked only by the ground and by discipline. At the same time the knight's face disappeared, from the open nasal helm through the first face plates to the enclosed great helm, which left shield and surcoat as the only means of recognition. The horses were given protection too, first as a quilted trapper, later as barding. The Crusades and the Barons' War offered ample opportunity to put it to the test.

    On the tabletop

The 18 knights on barded horses are sculpted at full gallop and together form a single charging wave. With couched lances they deliver the shock that decided battles in the heyday of chivalry, then fight on with sword, axe or mace. The many helmeted heads let you portray earlier or later knights. In games this cavalry needs open ground and foot troops to cover its back.
