    Background & context

    When the Seljuks opened up Anatolia after 1071, they brought with them a way of fighting that was foreign to the Crusaders: horsemen who stayed at a distance, shot and at once drew off again. Turkoman tribal contingents supplied these archers in large numbers, often as auxiliaries of foreign emirs. At Dorylaeum in 1097 and later at Arsuf they wore down heavily armoured columns for hours without seeking close combat. Only missile troops of the Crusaders' own took away their effect.

    On the tabletop

    The twelve horse archers represent Seljuk and Turkoman warriors of the crusading period. In games they keep their distance, shoot at armoured knights and foot troops and wheel away before melee is joined. Bow arms in many poses, including left-handed ones, show the riders drawing and shooting in different directions. With the standard bearer and drawn swords you build leaders, and the shields go on the arm or hang from the saddle.
