Background & context

Anyone who owned silver in the early Middle Ages seldom carried it about openly: it lay in iron-bound chests, in church treasuries or buried in the ground. The finds from Birka, Hedeby, Mästermyr and Oseberg show what these containers looked like: heavy planks, iron bands, simple locks. Chalices, crosses and reliquaries were at once objects of worship and portable wealth, which is why monasteries became favoured targets of the Northmen from the 8th century.

On the tabletop

Lay out the 24 chests and caskets and 45 treasures and artefacts as loot or objectives. Crosses, chalices, bibles and candlesticks belong in a chapel or monastery visited by raiders, the chests in a hall or storehouse. For scenarios where one side has to recover and carry off treasure, there are plenty of different pieces. The chests are based on finds from Birka, Hedeby, Mästermyr and Oseberg.
