    Background & context

    The Normans turned cavalry into the decisive arm of the 11th century. At Hastings in 1066 they charged the English shield wall for hours and pulled it apart with feigned flights, while Breton contingents held the left wing. Norman adventurers carried the same way of fighting to southern Italy and Sicily and, with Bohemond, on the First Crusade. For a century this type of horseman was the benchmark from England to the Levant.

    On the tabletop

    With the twelve riders you can field Norman or Breton knights, early crusaders or Andalusian armoured horsemen, depending on heads and shields. At Hastings the Normans charged the English shield wall again and again and drew it apart with feigned flights, and that is their job in your games too. They attack with lance or spear after first throwing javelins. Sword, axe and mace complete their weapons for the melee.
