Background & context

1226 rief Herzog Konrad von Masowien den Deutschen Orden gegen die heidnischen Pruzzen zu Hilfe, und Kaiser Friedrich II. sicherte den Brüdern in der Goldbulle von Rimini alles Land zu, das sie erobern würden. Aus Feldzügen entlang der Weichsel wurde ein eigener Staat mit der Marienburg als Zentrum. Auf dem Eis des Peipussees unterlag der Orden 1242 den Nowgorodern, bei Tannenberg 1410 dem polnisch-litauischen Heer. Die Ritter im weißen Mantel mit schwarzem Kreuz blieben trotzdem bis ins 15. Jahrhundert die schwerste Kavallerie des Ostseeraums.

On the tabletop

With horned and winged helmets and the cloaks, the twelve riders become knights of the Teutonic Order; with plain great helms they serve as any knights of the 13th century. In games they lead the charge as heavy cavalry against Prussians, Lithuanians or Russian armies. The armoured horses with caparisons make them resilient, and open ground suits them best. Sergeant brothers and mercenaries on foot complete an army of the Order's state.
