    Fallschirmjäger springen leicht und kämpfen schwer - dieser Widerspruch bestimmte jede alliierte Luftlandeoperation ab 1944. In der Normandie, bei Arnheim und in Bastogne standen die US-Verbände tagelang ohne Artillerie und ohne gesicherten Nachschub. Was an Feuerkraft mitkam, wurde in Teilen abgeworfen oder am Mann getragen. Der Mörser war deshalb oft das schwerste Rohr, das eine Kompanie überhaupt zur Verfügung hatte.

    On the tabletop

    For a US airborne company the 81 mm M1 mortar was often the heaviest weapon available, whether in Normandy, at Arnhem or in Bastogne. Its bombs land almost vertically and spread their blast all around, so you mainly use it against infantry. From a position behind your own line the team shells enemies gathering in trenches or behind walls. Three metal figures in airborne equipment form the crew.
