    Background & context

    The Type 97 was developed in the mid-thirties as the successor to the ponderous Type 89 and came off the line from 1938. More than 2,100 vehicles made it the most-produced Japanese medium tank, and overall only the even more numerous light Ha-Go was ahead of it. At 15 tonnes, with 26 mm of hull armour and a short 57mm gun, it was meant for use against infantry and field positions, not against other tanks. When American Shermans appeared from 1942, even the Shinhoto conversion with its 47mm anti-tank gun was of limited help.

    On the tabletop

    The Type 97 Chi-Ha is the standard tank of Japanese army lists in Bolt Action, even if its weight would have made it a light tank anywhere else. With the short 57 mm gun it supports the infantry against positions, while the Shinhoto version with a larger turret and 47 mm anti-tank gun can hold its own against American tanks from 1942. You decide which version to build during assembly. It suits games in China, at Khalkhin Gol and in the Pacific War.
