Product details

Background & context

As the war closed in on the Japanese home islands in 1945, the government put practically the entire population under arms with the Volunteer Fighting Corps. Only there were no arms left. So people practised thrusting at straw dummies with takeyari, sharpened bamboo poles, in school playgrounds and on factory grounds. Things looked no better in the cut-off island garrisons: no supplies, no ammunition, but the order to hold out.

On the tabletop

Towards the end of the war Japanese soldiers ran short of rifles and ammunition, and many took up sharpened bamboo poles. This squad of ten metal figures in ragged uniforms, an NCO and nine men, carries nothing but these spears. In Bolt Action it is therefore a pure close-combat unit for Pacific games of 1944 and 1945. It has to reach the enemy in a charge and is quickly cut down under sustained fire, so use every bit of cover on the way forward.
