The Japanese Teishin Shudan were elite soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army and were first deployed in 1942 during the attack on Palembang. After suffering heavy losses, they fought primarily as elite infantry-fanatical, battle-hardened, and feared in all theaters of the Pacific War.

Hintergrund & Einordnung

The Teishin Shudan - roughly translated as "Raiding Group" - were established as Japan's answer to German airborne successes in 1940 and placed under the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. Their first major operation was in February 1942 during the attack on Palembang in the Dutch East Indies, where they launched a surprise assault on the airfield and oil refinery. Heavy losses during airborne operations led to them subsequently fighting primarily as elite infantry on the ground - much like their German counterparts. Their final airborne operation against US airbases on Leyte ended in almost complete annihilation, but left significant damage. As an elite unit, they combined typical Japanese fighting spirit with extensive specialized training.
