    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The Pacific War from 1941 to 1945 was characterized by an unprecedented series of amphibious operations. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the US began a systematic island-hopping strategy, during which the US Marine Corps fought against fanatically defended positions at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. The Japanese defenders utilized dense jungle, bunker networks, and targeted banzai charges to inflict maximum casualties on the advancing Marines. This uncompromising form of warfare made the Pacific War one of the most brutal chapters of World War II.
