    Background & context

    By 1944 the Red Army was no longer the force of 1941. Supply, training and leadership were sound, and in the T-34/85 it had a tank in the field that could meet the heavy German tanks on equal terms. The summer offensive Bagration smashed Army Group Centre, and after that the advance went through Poland and East Prussia all the way to Berlin. Attacks were made on a broad front and in mass, backed by mortars, anti-tank rifles and an armoured arm that at last appeared in packs.

    On the tabletop

    8 body sprues and 5 weapon sprues make 40 Red Army soldiers, and during the build you decide who carries a Mosin-Nagant, PPSh-41, DP-28 or the PTRD. Riflemen form the bulk of the rifle squads, PPSh and DP-28 give them firepower at short and medium range, and with the PTRD anti-tank rifle you build an anti-tank team. The metal officer and medic stay behind the line, and the 82mm mortar team is the only support weapon. The T-34/85 rolls forward with the infantry as the only tank, producing a platoon that lives on its head count.
