Hintergrund & Einordnung

After the heavy losses of the early years, the Red Army increasingly took the initiative on the Eastern Front from 1943 onwards. Major operations such as Kursk, Bagration, and finally the advance on Berlin characterized this phase. Massed infantry, reliable medium tanks like the T-34, and strong fire support from Katyusha rocket launchers and divisional artillery were the hallmarks of Soviet offensive doctrine during these years.
