Background & context

From Kursk onwards the balance on the Eastern Front was reversed: the Red Army set the pace, and its attacks followed a clear pattern. First massed artillery flattened the forward positions, then tanks with infantry riding on them rolled through the gaps. The T-34/85 with its larger turret gun arrived in 1944 because the old 76mm weapon fell short against Panther and Tiger. The Katyusha, for its part, hit nothing in particular but covered a whole stretch of ground in seconds; ammunition took the place of precision.

On the tabletop

With 42 infantrymen you get three large rifle squads and still keep men for a fourth, smaller one. The resin Platoon Commander leads the platoon, and the 2 MG teams and the mortar team form the base of fire behind him. Heavy support comes in threefold: the T-34/85 rolls forward with the infantry, the Katyusha lays rockets on an entire section of the table before the assault, and the ZiS-3 engages targets at range as a divisional gun. This lets you play the Red Army of the last years of the war, where the infantry takes the objectives and three heavy weapons clear the way for it.
