    Background & context

    The Red Army relied on heavy infantry weapons because they could be produced in quantity and served by quickly trained crews. Medium machine guns pinned attackers down at short and medium range, while mortars, as the platoon's artillery, closed the gap to the division's heavy artillery. In the defence before Moscow as much as in the great offensives from 1943, the success of whole sectors hung on this firepower.

    On the tabletop

    This box provides a complete heavy weapons platoon to support your Soviet rifle platoons in Bolt Action. The two machine guns fire directly at attacking infantry, while the mortar lobs rounds onto enemies in trenches and behind walls. An officer leads the three teams. The Red Army relied heavily on such weapons, which could be built in large numbers and crewed quickly, for both its mass attacks and its stubborn defence.
