Hintergrund & Einordnung

Throughout World War II, the Red Army consistently relied on the massive deployment of heavy infantry weapons to strengthen both attacks and defensive positions. Machine guns provided direct fire support at short and medium ranges, while mortars delivered indirect fire as organic artillery at the platoon level. This combination enabled Soviet units to withstand numerically superior opponents or to support large-scale attacks with sufficient firepower. Within the framework of a bolt-action heavy weapon platoon, this combination forms the backbone of Soviet fire support on the tabletop.
