Background & context

The basis was the Sherman V, as the British called the M4A4. The 17-pounder would fit into its turret only when rotated, with a new breech, the radio moved outside and a box on the turret rear. A lash-up, but the only British tank that could take on Panther and Tiger at normal battle ranges. From 6 June 1944 one Firefly went with each troop, and towards the end of the year two. German crews had orders to knock it out first, which is why many crews camouflaged the long barrel.

On the tabletop

Bolt Action rates the Sherman Firefly as a medium tank whose 17-pounder counts as a super-heavy anti-tank gun, for British, Canadian and Polish armoured platoons. That makes it the answer to Panthers and Tigers, at the cost of a weaker high-explosive round. From D-Day one Firefly ran with each troop, two by late 1944, which is how you add it to your other Shermans. Because German crews were told to target Fireflies first, keep it in cover. Decals with tank names are included.
