Product details

Background & context

Serving a gun was a craft worked to a strict rhythm: sponge, load, ram, lay, fire, and then quickly step aside, because the carriage leapt back several paces on firing. Anyone standing in the way lost a foot. Only then did the gunners haul the piece back into its firing position and start again. Practised Russian crews kept up one to two rounds a minute in this way for hours.

On the tabletop

The Licorne was a Russian variant of the howitzer with a long barrel that fired flatter, further and more accurately than French howitzers. In this set the four gunners are jumping back from the gun because the shot is about to go off. In Black Powder it gives your Russian battery a piece that fires shells in an arc and at longer range. Alongside the 6- and 12-pounders of the range you can build a battery for the years 1809 to 1815.
