Product details

Background & context

The line infantry of the Tsar's army consisted largely of peasants who were conscripted for decades of service. Drill centred on formation, march order and the bayonet attack; musketry training was considered secondary, and the smoothbore muskets did not reach far against the Allies' rifles in any case. The grey-brown greatcoat was worn over the green and white uniform so often that it looked to their opponents like the uniform itself.

On the tabletop

Line infantry made up the bulk of the Tsar's army in the Crimean War, and its strength lay in the bayonet charge rather than in shooting. In Black Powder the 24 plastic figures in helmets make one large unit or two smaller ones, and eight forage cap heads add variety to the ranks. Three metal command figures lead them. Send them forward in dense formation against the British, French, Sardinians and Ottomans, whose rifles reach further.
