Background & context

Frankreich stellte als eine der ersten Nationen einen professionellen Artillerie-Train auf: Statt gemieteter Fuhrleute, die beim ersten Kanonenschuss verschwanden, saßen ab 1800 Soldaten des Train d'Artillerie auf den Zugpferden. Sie galten als Nichtkämpfer, ritten aber mit den Batterien bis an die Feuerlinie und holten sie unter Beschuss wieder heraus. Napoleon, selbst Artillerist, verlangte genau diese Beweglichkeit: Die Grande Batterie von Wagram oder Borodino funktionierte nur mit Fahrern, die ihre Geschütze rasch verlegten. Die Garde nahm sich dafür die besten Pferde, gern schwarze.

On the tabletop

With a limber, a four-horse team and drivers of the artillery train you turn a gun of your French line artillery into a mobile battery in Black Powder. On the table it shows that a gun is moving to a new position, or it stands behind your line as scenery. The drivers of the Train d'Artillerie counted as non-combatants, yet they rode right up to the firing line and brought the guns back out under fire. The model is cast in Warlord Resin Plus.
