Background & context

With the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 Napoleon created the Duchy of Warsaw out of Prussia's partition territories, and in return the Poles provided him with an army. Under Prince Józef Poniatowski it grew by 1812 to 17 infantry regiments in dark blue coats with the square-topped czapka. In 1809 it threw back the Austrians at Raszyn and conquered Galicia, and in 1812 it marched into Russia as V Corps of the Grande Armée and was bled white at Smolensk and Borodino. The remnants stayed loyal to Napoleon as far as Leipzig in 1813, where Poniatowski, newly appointed a marshal, drowned in the Elster.

On the tabletop

A Polish line battalion of the Duchy of Warsaw is built from 36 figures marching or attacking, with eight more skirmishing ahead as the flank company. Fusiliers, grenadiers, voltigeurs and command are all included, so the battalion is complete. Your troops fight at Raszyn against Austria in 1809, as V Corps in Russia in 1812 and on to Leipzig in 1813. With the elite companies box from the same maker, they grow into a larger Polish force.
