Background & context

On 18 June 1815 Wellington's army stood on the ridge at Mont-Saint-Jean, and the British regiments were in the minority within it. Hanoverians, Dutch, Brunswickers and the King's German Legion filled the line at least as strongly as the redcoats. The Belgic shako with its tall front plate is the sure identifying mark for 1815; in the Peninsular War the line still wore the stovepipe. Anyone fielding this campaign is therefore always building an alliance, not a national army.

On the tabletop

British and Hanoverians stand side by side in this brigade: the 72 line infantry with Belgic shako make three battalions the size of the 24 Hanoverians, who provide the fourth, or two large ones if you like broad lines. The 12 heavy cavalry of the Union Brigade you hold back as a regiment until an attack has been repulsed and the counter-stroke comes. The Royal Horse Artillery 9-pounder needs a clear field of fire, on a rise at the edge of the line for instance. The mounted officer leads as commander, and on the table you play defensively: hold, shoot, then follow up with the cavalry.
