Background & context

William Congreve developed his war rockets from Indian models from 1804 onwards. The Royal Artillery and Royal Marines used them at Copenhagen, Leipzig and Waterloo, among other places. The rockets were never accurate; their effect lay in the noise, the smoke and the fact that horses and inexperienced troops bolted from them. Enemies and their own side alike regarded the rocket troops with mixed feelings.

On the tabletop

A rocketeer with his horse and a rocket fired straight from the ground represents the British rocket troops without a frame in Black Powder. You place the figure next to your artillery or as a small detachment of its own. Its effect rests less on hits than on noise and smoke, which unsettle enemy horses and inexperienced troops. Rockets like this were used in the War of 1812 as well as in Europe, for instance at Leipzig and Waterloo.
