Background & context

William Congreve baute seine Feststoffraketen nach indischen Vorbildern und verkaufte sie der britischen Armee als billigen Ersatz für Artillerie. Genau waren sie nie, aber Lärm, Rauchfahne und Brandwirkung trieben Pferde durch und Rekruten aus der Stellung. Im Krieg von 1812 kamen sie bei Bladensburg, North Point und New Orleans zum Einsatz; der Beschuss von Fort McHenry lieferte der amerikanischen Nationalhymne eine ihrer bekanntesten Zeilen.

On the tabletop

With the Congreve rocket frame and its two crew you add a rocket detachment to a British army in Black Powder. The Royal Marines and Royal Artillery used rockets above all in the War of 1812, for example at Bladensburg, North Point and New Orleans. They were never accurate; their effect lay in noise, smoke and fire, which unsettled horses and inexperienced troops. So you set the frame up next to your battery or behind your own line.
