    Background & context

On 16 May 1811 Marshal Soult attacked the allied army under Beresford at La Albuera. Under cover of a squall of hail and rain, Polish lancers and French hussars fell on Colborne's British brigade and almost wiped it out. In the end British lines held the hill at a terrible cost. In the 57th, the wounded Colonel Inglis called on his men to die hard, which gave them their nickname, the Die Hards.

    On the tabletop

Bostock suits a game in which the weather takes a hand. Before your Black Powder game, agree with your opponent that a storm blows in from a set turn, cutting visibility and firing range. Your British line then spots approaching cavalry late and has to decide quickly whether to fire, form up or fall back. The scenario takes its cue from Albuera in 1811.
