    Product details

    Background & context

From 1809 the British general William Beresford rebuilt the Portuguese army. British officers joined Portuguese regiments, and training, pay and supply were put on a new footing. From 1810 Portuguese brigades were a fixed part of most British divisions, joined by the light Caçador battalions. They passed their first major test at Bussaco, and Wellington soon came to value them as dependable troops.

    On the tabletop

Wellington's divisions were often mixed, and you can show exactly that on the table. Put Hawthorne into a British battalion and combine it in the same Black Powder brigade with Portuguese line infantry and Caçadores. All of them answer to one commander, so they advance together and cover each other. The result is an army as it fought on the Peninsula from 1810.
