Background & context

Auf der Halbinsel führten britische Offiziere ihre Bataillone in einer Linie von nur zwei Gliedern, dünner als bei allen anderen Armeen Europas, dafür feuerte jeder Mann. Gegen die französischen Angriffskolonnen ging diese Rechnung von Vimeiro bis Salamanca immer wieder auf. Damit die Linie hielt, brauchte es Offiziere und Sergeants, die sie im Pulverdampf zusammenhielten, und die Colours als sichtbaren Bezugspunkt. Der Ruf der dünnen roten Linie entstand hier, Jahre vor Waterloo.

On the tabletop

Six figures lead a battalion of your British line infantry from Wellington's Peninsular army in Black Powder, and two flagpoles with finials are included. British battalions fought in a line only two ranks deep in which every man could fire, and they needed officers and NCOs to hold them together in the powder smoke. On the table the command group therefore marks the centre of your line. It suits games from Vimeiro to Salamanca.
