Background & context

Belgium belonged to France until 1814, and many of the men who turned out in Dutch-Belgian uniform in 1815 had been serving under the French flag only shortly before. Wellington trusted them correspondingly little and deliberately mixed them in among his British and Hanoverian brigades. At Quatre Bras and Waterloo they nevertheless stood in the thick of the fire, and on 18 June Bijlandt's brigade held one of the most exposed positions in the whole line.

On the tabletop

These 24 Belgians in Warlord Resin march with bayonets levelled, so in Black Powder they are best fielded as a battalion that advances in column and seeks to attack. The command group consists of officer, NCO, drummer and ensign. Dutch and Belgian troops made up a third of Wellington's army in 1815, and many had served under Napoleon shortly before. At Quatre Bras and Waterloo they held firm despite heavy French attacks.
