Product details

Background & context

The militia of New England was old: as early as the 17th century every man fit to bear arms had to show that he had a weapon and had drilled. The Minutemen were its picked elite, raised to be ready to march within minutes. On 19 April 1775 it became clear what that was worth. After Lexington and Concord, more and more companies latched on to the British column and fired on it from walls and the edges of woods as it marched back. By evening Boston was surrounded.

On the tabletop

These 30 Minutemen represent the New England militia at the start of the War of Independence in 1775. Different muskets and heads show who turned out: farmers and craftsmen, young and old. On the table they fight from cover behind walls and fences, as against the British column returning from Lexington and Concord, or hold a hastily dug redoubt as on Breed's Hill. Their opponents are British line troops and grenadiers.
