    The War of the Spanish Succession was one of the most formative conflicts of the early 18th century, drawing nearly all major European powers into years of armed struggle. On one side stood France under its power-conscious monarch Louis XIV; on the other, a broad coalition of British, Dutch, and German forces jointly defending Austrian interests. The conflict extended far beyond the European continent, making it one of the first truly global wars. Remarkable for this era was the extensive uniformity of military dress: often, only the color of the coats distinguished between the factions, allowing the figures to be used for different nations.
