Background & context

The War of the Spanish Succession was one of the most formative conflicts of the early 18th century, drawing nearly all major European powers into years of armed struggle. On one side stood France under its power-conscious monarch Louis XIV; on the other, a broad coalition of British, Dutch, and German forces jointly defending Austrian interests. The conflict extended far beyond the European continent, making it one of the first truly global wars. Remarkable for this era was the extensive uniformity of military dress: often, only the color of the coats distinguished between the factions, allowing the figures to be used for different nations.

On the tabletop

Which side you lead is only decided by paint and flag, because the banner sheets cover the armies of the Sun King and the Grand Alliance. You split the 96 infantrymen into battalions for the battle line; how many depends on how large you play your units. The 12 horsemen stand as a cavalry regiment on one wing, and the three guns with their 12 gunners go individually in front of the infantry or together as a battery. Of the three mounted officers, one takes overall command and the other two each lead a brigade, which puts a small division on the table.
